New Generation Hyperstrings

Tod Machover, Tristan Jehan, Diana Young

Like the Media Lab Hyperstring project of 1990-1993 the New Generation Hyperstrings research focuses on creating new technology and music for expert performers of traditional string instruments. By carefully measuring characteristics of both the audio output of the instrument and the bowing gesture of the player and using this data to control aspects of the amplified sound, new musical possibilities are provided. The current model of the Hyperviolin features an electric violin, whose audio output provides raw material for new real-time timbre analysis and synthesis techniques, and an enhanced violin bow. The Hyperviolin work is part of the Toy Symphony project, in which it serves as a virtuoso performance instrument in an ensemble including a full orchestra, children's choir, and children playing new music toys.
